Babies have many ways of communicating their discomfort. One of the most common actions that leaves the parents puzzled is ear pulling. If your baby is constantly tugging their ear you might wonder if it is teething, ear infection, or something else entirely.

In this blog, we are going to explore the possible reasons for ear pulling in babies, how to differentiate between teething and an ear infection and what you can do to help your baby.

Why Do Babies Pull Their Ears?

There are many reasons for which babies might pull, tug or rub their ears. Here are some common ones;

  • Teething:

When new teeth push through the gums, they can cause discomfort or pain. This pain can radiate towards the ears which can cause babies to pull their ears.

  • Ear Infections:

Babies and toddlers between 3 months and 3 years old are more prone to ear infections. It is because their ear tubes are more horizontal making it difficult for the fluid to drain. The fluid build up can cause pain making babies pull their ears.

  • Exploration:

As the fine motor skills of babies improve, they become more aware of their body. They  explore their body parts by touch. Babies may touch, pull or play with their ears because they have just discovered them.

  • Blocked Ears Or Wax Build Up:

Wax build up in ears can cause a sensation of fullness or blockage and lead to irritation. Due to this irritation babies may pull their ears.

  • Allergies Or Cold:

Congestion caused by cold or allergies can create pressure in the ears and cause discomfort. Which can make babies pull their ears.

  • Sleepiness Or Self-Soothing:

Some babies pull their ears when they are tired or as a way to sooth themselves.

  • Dry Or Itchy Skin:

Babies may pull at their ears simply because they are itchy. Dry skin around a baby’s ear can be caused by heating, air-conditioning, certain soaps, laundry detergents, or clothing fabrics.

How To Know If It Is Teething Or Infection?

It is tricky to find out whether your baby is pulling their ear due to teething or they are having an ear infection. Here are some common signs which can help you tell them apart;

Signs Of Teething:

  • Increased drooling
  • Red or swollen gums
  • Gnawing and chewing on things
  • Mild Irritability
  • Mild temperature of less than 38°C
  • Flushed cheek
  • Rash on face
  • Not sleeping well

Signs Of Ear Infection:

  • Fussiness and crying
  • Fever
  • Fluid drainage from ear
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Trouble with hearing
  • Trouble with balance or dizziness
  • Loss of appetite

What Can Parents Do?

Here are some things you can try to soothe your baby;

If It Is Teething:

  • You can offer a teething toy to your baby. It may help soothe gum discomfort.
  • Use a clean and cold washcloth for the baby to chew on
  • Give them teething rings. They provide a safe chewing option and may help reduce their discomfort
  • Gently massage their gums with a clean finger
  • If necessary, give a pain reliever like paracetamol or ibuprofen approved by the doctor
  • According to the NHS, if your baby is 6 months or older you can give them something healthy to chew on, such as raw fruits and vegetables.

If It Is Ear Infection:

  • Consult a pediatrician for evaluation of your baby
  • Follow recommendations of the doctor for painkillers or antibiotics (if the cause is bacterial)
  • Keep the baby hydrated

When To See A Doctor:

It is important to consult a doctor if your child;

  • Shows signs of infection like fever, difficulty hearing, discharge from ears
  • Is inconsolably fussy or in pain
  • Is having symptoms that persist for more than a few days
  • Is having unexplained fever and is unwell
  • May have inserted a foreign object in their ear

Always trust your parental instincts, you know your baby best. If you feel they are not well, consult with a doctor.

Final Thoughts:

Ear pulling in babies can be due to many reasons. From teething to ear infection or simply exploration. Observing additional symptoms can help you determine the cause. When in doubt, it is important to consult your doctor to make sure your baby gets the right care and comfort.
